Fatal Four Cause of Construction Fatalities

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) reports that electrocution is the second leading cause of death in the construction industry. Referred to by the DOL as a “fatal four,” electrocution was responsible for 74 deaths, equal to 8.5 percent of fatalities, on construction sites in 2014. Electrical currents have seriously injured many more construction workers in Miami and throughout Florida.

Electrocutions are preventable if employers, property owners and contractors take basic precautions. Commonly electrocutions occur when a construction worker:

• Works directly with electrical wires during construction, repairs or demolition
• Works on scaffolding laid too close to wires and generators
• Hits a live wire while trenching or excavating
• Uses equipment near overhead wires that have not been depowered
• Generates an electrical current near water
• Power grids are not “locked out” and “tag”
